My summary is all about the Cherokee Indians. The Cherokee Indians originally called themselves the Aniyunwiya, “the principal people”. The Cherokee men wore breechcloths and leggings. But, the Cherokee women wore wraparound skirts and poncho-style blouses. The women harvested crops of corn, beans, squash, and sunflowers. The men hunted deer, wild turkeys, and small game. In war ,the Cherokees fired arrows or fought with a melee weapon like a tomahawk or a spear. A famous Cherokee Indian from modern times is Wilma Mankillern the first woman to be Principal Chief for the Cherokee.
The Comanche lived in the southwestern U.S.A. in the Great Plains cultural region. They hunted and gathered for food, made shelter and clothing out of buffalo hides and skin. The Comanche’s lived near small rivers in teepees. They did not have any art or a complex religion. They only had 1 dance, the war dance, held on a full moon. This was about the Comanche.
The Arapaho lived in Colorado, Wyoming, and Oklahoma. They provided for their basic needs by inventing tools and weapons. They used animals to make clothing, shelter, dinner and other things. They built tipis out of buffalo skin. They ate buffalo, berries, plants, dog flesh, crops and other animals. Arapaho wore moccasin, breechcloth, and buckskin dress.
The Mohawk Indians were located in what is now New York State. The Mohawks were resourceful. They hunted, farmed, and gathered food. They were clever and smart people. Hopi means good, peaceful, or wise. They are part of the Pueblo Indian Culture. They lived in homes made of mud or stone. The Hopi lived in the southwest desert. There it was very hot. What I found interesting was that the women owned the village, but the men governed them. The Hopi needed rain and they believed that the "Kachina" would bring them rain. The "Kachina" were honored in order to get rain.
My Summary for the Hopi Indains
The life of the Hopi must have been hard because they lived in the Southwest. Hopi people were related to the Anasazi who were also a tribe of Indians. The Hopi’s had a language called Shoshonean with some of their words were Spanish. Hopi means “Peaceful People”. Hopi’s planted their crops by waiting until it finished raining then planted the crops in the newly rained water. The Hopi’s made their own clothing from cotton. Hopi’s lived in Pueblo’s that were made of stone, mud, and stood 4 stories high. Doesn’t the life of the Hopi Indians seem interesting?
The Mohawks tribe lived in Northeast American along the St. Lawrence. They were one of the five original members of the Iroquois League. Mohawk means “man eater”
Farming is how the Mohawk got their food. They grew crops called “The Three Sisters” (beans, corn, and squash). The tribe moved about every 10 to 15 years when their fields produced bad crops. They also hunted and fished.
The Mohawks people lived in longhouses. They were large enough for a family of 30 to 60 people. Longhouses could have been about 25 to 150 feet long. They had a personal are which was used for clothes, tools, and a bed. Tools needs were poles, bark and animal skin.
Women wore skirts, vest, and moccasins. The necklaces were made out of animal teeth and shell beads. Winter times they wore shawls and rabbit fur capes. Men wore dears’ skin breechcloth. Cold days they wore leggings and tunics.
The society called false face society were thought to have special powers. An ill Indian would ask them to run the bad sprit away.
There were even festivals 6 times a year they lasted for days. They were held to give thanks to good sprits
Women owned the longhouses, controlled land and chose chief. They played games like scare bowl on the last day of the year called “Ceremonial of Midnight”
